		<description>
AboutI am a multidisciplinary artist/designer maker, writer and material explorer,
with a background in fashion and textiles.Studio 0ty was created as a research vehicle and way to investigate
the big and small questions of mending the human/nature break, how made artifacts, soft materials and site-specific
experiments can function as research tools, field study aids or habitat interventions. This work generates data, offering ways to observe, record and engage in our immediate
environment and non-human neighbours.
&#38;nbsp;
I have taught undergrad and post-grad in several institution over the past 10+ years including UAL where i am now.
I am a researcher in the field at CRAB studios&#38;nbsp;

hello at louizeharries.com

Why?/Manifesto for Studio 0ty
Alot of my working life has been in fashion and textiles, the intersectional issues (enviromental and social justice) surrounding the fashion industry and the making of materials are well documented,During my MA i did a deep dive into the human behavior factors and systems driving ballooning consumption which needs to be tackled alongside materal waste and inequality.
But i kept circling back to the disconnect to our own enviroment and deeply broken relationships to the other species/ non-humans that we inhabit this planet
with which keep us alive, fed, breathing and clothed.
That disconnect is a hyper-object and is driving&#38;nbsp; most crisis faced today,
The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world with declining biodiversity and a deepening
disrespct or understanding of the environment and our place within it,&#38;nbsp;The loss of
habitat and species is rapid – We cannot fight for what we don’t know or love
so this work is an attempt to look outside my literal front door and document what still surrounds us at this point in time, and to offer material, poetic and practical ways
to mediate relationships between humans and the more-than-human world.

Positioned
between art, design, making, research and citizen science, Studio 0ty invites curiosity,
attention, and entanglement, offering playful but serious interventions into
how we observe, imagine, co-create, and reimagine other ways of being.

Feral Landscapes - Are the betwixed spaces of disturbance from industrial processes/capitalocene and mixed with non-human activitys.
Feral bullace gin-Bullace&#38;nbsp;berries (like Sloes no thorns) foragaed from a mini scrubland that sits at the side of intensively farmed fields and a concrete apron where hay stores are wrapped in black plastic, the edges containing dumped metal agricultural machinery and old tyres. This pocket of land contains the largest crops of bullace berries in the area.
Living in the counrtyside is still haunted by the images of a green and plesant land -bucolic idyll of a landowning fantasy, The reality is a heavy industrialized area, worked by people on low wages and precarious seasonal work.

Lucky potato-Investigations into human potatao relationships, from worship and orginal cultivation by the Incas to saving famine struck Europians in one century to being used a cover story in killing populations via colonial stealing they’ve had a wild ride.
Geotagged potaoes -Collected spuds left after harvesting, made dried into starch and made into bioplastic spuds with marked with exact locations
Potato Power-&#38;nbsp;

“This is a sad hoax for industrial man no longer eats potatoes made from solar energy- now he eats potatoes partly made of oil” Howard Odum

My house looks out onto potato fields - the green expanse fools you into thinking your in “nature”- but these monoculture crops are a heavy industry site // Howard Odum author of “environment power and society” thought high yield crops like spuds only existed in a symbiotic relationship with fossil fuels -without the propping of intensive farming they wouldn’t survive - Odum was the pioneer of using electrical circuit diagrams showing the net energy used in agroecology- linking cybernetics , computing and ecosystems-After harvesting, excess spuds are scattered around the edges of the field- Seeing them through Odum 👀 as units of oil and energy they are proceesed into bioplastic to make candle sticks.

On a visit to a textile reprocessing plant, Pat,the lady showing me around pulled two dress off the giant conveyor belts that wound around the factory, ‘look,’ she said ‘these have the shop labels still on them, every day more and more unworn garments end up in our textile bins, often i wonder why?’
It was estimated in 2007 that the average person was exposed to over 3000 brand images and messages per day,

There is now a myriad interconnected ways of collecting our data and using this information to create very detailed pictures of us as consumers, so we are living in highly curated advertised bubbles, which is helping us to ignore the human and environmental cost of our consumption….

Advertising has long sought to reach out to try affect our subconscious decision making // we take this as given // but how is this changing now that the technology is? and what about technologies being developed, especially BCI or brain computer interface a rapidly expanding field with much investment, estimates from Grand View research value this market&#38;nbsp; at 22.7 bn by 2020.

The increasing interest in the commercial aspects of BCI has caused concern among professional bio-ethicists who have published papers looking to examine the issues surrounding human rights and possible breaches by these new and emerging technologies ….

My subconscious shopper seeks to explore these issues, by working with open source biosensing hardwear/softwear i made EEG headsets for children that collects neural data for marketing purposes….this product was taken to a leading technology lawyer and with the correct consent forms verified as legal if i wanted to take it to market….

I wanted to make such a product to engage in conversations around technology ethics, and concepts of free will in a consumer society .

Red Rains of Change/Pollution Protest Drone .
The Red Rains of Change is a speculative counter fiction and responce to the illegal level of
air pollution seen in London during 2016/2017
London had reached crisis
levels of air pollution, with the UK government being taken to court twice by
Client Earth on their failure to address the dangerous situation. Just 5 days
into 2017 the legal limit was breached in the capital. This project proposes that in the presence of illegal levels of pollution a drone is deployed that produces red rain, making the pollution visible - both as a health warning and protest. The drone is equipped with the bacteria P.syringae to induce rain (a natural pollution suppressor) and algea spores from the lichen T.annulata that turns this rain red, the science behind this invention is backed up by scientists at UCL and the University of Montana. The biblical element highlights
the severity of the problem, and puts
contemporary plagues into a historical myth based context, while the
bio design taps into current conversations around climate change and bio
engineering solutions and the publics relationship (and fears) around
technology. A Bio Design Challenge shortlisted project with Katie May Boyd.&#38;nbsp;
Exhibited at Open Cell studios during LDW 2018.

	New Rituals
Can new rituals help prevent biodiversity loss?

In 2013 an amateur
group the Krefeld
entomological society from Germany discovered that the total mass of insects
caught in their trapping sites was down 80% raising the alarm in the EU about
loss of wild pollinators, wild pollinators are the 1500 species including
hoverflies butterflies moths wasps bumble solitary and mining bees that
pollinate our food crops and cattle feed that provide free and essential services
which in 2007 in the UK were valued at around 430 billion per year,

These wild
pollinators work alongside commercial honey bee hives in pollinating and recent
research and experiments by the AAAS have shown that when pollination is by
honey bees alone crop yields go down around 30 to 40% which has huge
implications for food security and a growing world population.

In the UK defra commissed ‘the national pollinator strategy’ to look at
the growing evidence in loss of wild pollinators but concluded ‘There remains much uncertainty and
research to be done around the ecological and biological mechanisms connecting
changes in pollinator biodiversity, with pollination processes and ultimately
the quality and quantity of UK crop yields’

 Dr.Ben colleen from UCL
London at the centre for biodiversity says &#38;nbsp;‘the conservation status of less than 3% of the worlds
described biodiversity is known so you can imagine how much data is available
for uk insects’ and although there are now computational modeling programs
available which can analyze and map trends helping to discover why insect loss
is occurring there are issues with historical hard data as much of it was
collected by amateur groups and is inconsistent.

In order to fill the gaps
in our knowledge of the UKs insect diversity we need data and lots of it but
collected in controlled samples and recorded accurately…

Almost in a way that resembles a ritual,

The uk has many weird and wonderful folk traditions and rituals like the
Mari lywd in Wales at winter solstice to the ‘obby ‘oss in Cornwall which in
recent years thanks to artists like Jeremy Deller who toured Britain with a
folk archive have enjoyed a renascence and public interest.

 My proposal is too
capitalize on this new interest and create faux pagan style rituals that layer
on top of existing rituals to encourage communities to collect the hard data
needed.

The greeting of the pollination orchestra.

This data collecting ritual would take place on mayday bank holiday

involving people gathering on the village green to
meet the pollinating instruments ,

Followed by the the dance of the sweep net, sweep netting is the method
used by scientists in the field when taking a control sample,&#38;nbsp; to record the insects in a
designated area,&#38;nbsp; the contents
would be noted into an official ledger then onto the next section to be
monitored.

The main instrument/ artifact is two hollow carved
out wooden hemispheres attached and made into a resonance chamber and mounted
with tuning forks that vibrate at the same frequency as bees and
hoverflies at 400 Hz and cause a type of pollination call buzz pollination, the
horsehair tassel attached to the bottom is what Chinese farmers in Sichuan have
to use to pollinate their pear crops by hand, beacause of over use of pesticides
and mono culture causing biodiversity and wild pollinator loss…this artifact will
serve as a reminder of what our future will be in the impossible task of hand
pollination &#38;nbsp;if we don’t work to
protect our biodiversity.
